The battle of paddles is back!

Join us for the Bath Dragon Boat Race on 9 September

After a hugely successful Dragon Boat event last year - the Bath Dragon Boat Challenge is back bigger and even better for 2018!

Team SRA are boldly challenged to take up their paddles and race against the other dragons in the Bath dragon boat race across 200m course on 9 September!

Things got a little more serious, when the heat was on. We only narrowly missed the semi-finals by seconds - probably because the hats weren't terribly aero-dynamic!

Required

  • No experience!
  • A sense of humour - this event is brilliant fun!
  • The ability to eat lots of pizza (or similar!)
  • Someone to keep an eagle eye on David, who tried to tip the boat last year!
  • A kind heart and lots of friends - lots of fundraising required!

Get involved

  • In the crew: we need a minimum of 8 people to participate and ideally 12+ would be better to allow for changes in the team over the 3 heats. 
  • As a spectator: come and enjoy the atmosphere and cheer the team on.
  • Fundraising: the event supports two local charities: Designability and The Mountain Way. SRA have paid the entry donation of £500. On top of this we need to raise as much money as possible with an additional £600 set as a minimum target by the organisers. Karen will set up a Just Giving page to help with our fundraising efforts.

Be part of a World Record attempt

This January and February the local British Heart Foundation shops are filling their windows with love and attempting to break a world record for the longest chain of paper hearts. To mark Valentine’s Day a team of BHF supporters will come together to create the chain. The current record stands at 8,525 paper hearts apparently! If you would like to take part, here are the details. 

To take part, all you need to do is:

  • Buy a £2 World Record Love Note at a local BHF shop till
  • Write your own message to share the love. It could be for a friend, family member or even just your pet!
  • Hand the note back in.

Funds raised will help support life saving research.

Countdown to Andy and Adam running the Half Bath!

It is countdown time to Half Bath Marathon on 4th March 2018.  Both Andy B and Adam are taking the challenge to run in the event and raise valuable funds for two charities.

Andy is running in support of the Compassion, which supports children who are born into poverty by providing them with their basic human needs and an education.   He has set up a secure donation page here.

Adam is running to support the charity Prostate Cancer UK.  He has set up a secure donation page here.

Both would be grateful of any contributions that you feel you want to give.

Bath dragon boat race 2017

Team SRA boldly took their paddles and raced against the other dragons in the Bath dragon boat race on September 10th. There were 14 teams taking part with a variety of interesting looking hats adorned by many.

We paddled furiously over three heats where the team were seriously focused as we raced over the 150 meter course. Emily and Emma set the pace from the front of the boat whilst the drummer hung on for dear life, balancing precariously on a small moving seat at the front of the boat!  As we went over the finish line to the sound of a horn, so the fun and frolics began with a near capsize on heat three (thanks David!)

In between the heats we nipped off for some well deserved refreshments and had a nice little jog back to the dragon boat as a warm up.....

As the heats came to a finish so we all waited with baited breath to see if we had made it through to the semi finals! We missed out by a matter of seconds, most likely due to the size of our mexican sombreros', which weren't terribly aero-dynamic. 

A big heart thank you to everybody that took part and helped raised money for Bath based charity Designability and their Whizzybug Loan Scheme. The dragon boaters have managed to raise over £20,000 to help give children under 5 years of age access to a fun and innovative wheelchair.

Well it’s not long to go now until the SRA crew will be battling it out in the Bath Dragon Boat Race!

Location: The Scoop, Victoria Bridge Road, Bath, BA2 3FL. The racing will take place alongside the Crest Nicholson Riverside Housing development, which is behind Sainsbury Petrol Station. The crew will be on site at 10.30 am on Sunday 10th September.

First round: 11.45 (heat 6) Lane 2
Second round: 13.45 (heat 14) Lane 1
Third round: 15.15 (heat 20) Lane 2

If we make it to the finals, depending where we come we will need to do one of the following:
Semi 1: 15.45   Semi 2: 16.00
Final:   16.15   Presentation of medals and trophy: 16.20

We have the pleasure of working with The Genesis Trust in Bath. They have been established in the city for over 21 years, and are the first point of contact for homeless and vulnerable adults in Bath.

The Genesis Trust are running a fundraising coffee morning tomorrow at Three Ways School in Odd Down as part of #SmallCharityWeek.

Making our laugh matter - 24th March

Join the Friday fun and help change lives.

Friday 24th March is Red Nose Day. We want to do our bit and raise some money towards the projects that are being supported this year. All you need to do is wear something red to work or bring a red accessory (or both)!

Please pay £1 to Emma or Amy tomorrow (or more if you like). They will leave a pot on top of reception with a team list to tick off your payment.

Dressing sustainably on Christmas Jumper Day

Jane shares a few tips on how to enjoy a more sustainable Chirstmas Jumper Day

As much as I'm anticipating the fun and festivities of Christmas Jumper Day and the support it raises for Save the Children, I was bothered about the one-day-a-year wearing of a jumper made by the hands of who-knows-who and which may sit in landfill for who-knows-how-long. I contacted LoveYourClothes for some advice, so thought I'd share it ...

 

Obtaining your Christmas Jumper

  • Check out local charity shops for pre-loved Christmas jumpers, rather than buying new.
    (Apparently extending the life of clothing by just three months would lead to a 5-10% reduction in their carbon, water and waste footprints.)
     
  • Check out Oxfam's online shop

 

After Christmas Jumper Day

It’s also important to dispose of the jumper in the best way once you’re finished with it – every year, 350,000 tonnes of clothing needlessly goes to landfill when it can be reused or recycled. 
  • Wear it for the whole of January (unlikely), or once a year for the next 30 years (also highly unlikely) #30Wears
     
  • Take to charity shop for someone to wear next year
     
  • Take heed of the other advice from LoveYourClothes on what to do with your pre-loved clothing

Thanks to everyone who filled a shoe box for Operation Christmas Child. I am sure there will be some very happy children when it comes time for opening!

Christmas Jumper Day

It won't be long before we are putting on those festive jumpers, this time raising money for Save the Children as part of their National Christmas Jumper Day.

Get searching your wardrobe for that annual woolly jumper, or get blinging the one you wear most weekends. We want to see you in it on Friday 16 December!  More details to follow.
