Sensitive town centre redevelopment
Abergavenny needed to relocate its ancient cattle market to a new setting, leaving a large vacant site in the town centre. The council held a design competition to select a regeneration scheme. The new plans had to include an ASDA food store, basement car park, public library and non-food retail units.
SRA’s winning plans also suggested including residential accommodation to improve the mix of uses. We added new public routes, opening up a formerly impenetrable block and improving access to the heart of the town. To extend the lively Brewery Yard market area, we also advised widening Lion Street.
Aesthetically, our designs combined hard and soft landscaping and a generous portico on the front of the library to give the new quarter a civic feel. By using local stone and echoing the stepped eaves of nearby buildings, the design integrates old and new, while increasing usable public space.
