IKEA have been a client of SRA since 1992. In fact, we have designed many of their UK projects, from improving existing layouts to building brand new stores. Often in record time.
SRA brings innovative solutions to IKEA’s challenges. So long has been our working relationship that we have found we’ve absorbed some of their Swedish design DNA into our own company.
IKEA often need to improve capacity in constrained urban locations, without increasing the building’s footprint. SRA has designed a raft of solutions adapted to the IKEA format. These include designing ‘bolt on’ mezzanine levels or large extensions: all constructed while the store continues to trade.
Working with the construction team, SRA has consistently exceeded expectations in speed of delivery. IKEA previously believed that a store couldn’t be built in less than 38 weeks. Yet we erected their 280,000sqft Glasgow store in just 35 weeks, and others in only 32.
IKEA have an ambitious sustainability and cost saving programme. SRA looks at every angle to meet or exceed these goals. For the Cardiff store we trialled solar-shading fins, which have now become the international benchmark (and won regional construction awards). Other examples include using harvested rainwater to feed the toilets and using wood pellet burners from their waste wood to create heat.
