Old Maltings Building, Burton-On-Trent
As with all Listed Building conversions it is important to be aware of the planning constraints while also pushing creative boundaries. This Victorian red brick maltings building was originally built by Bass & Co in 1864. We drew on our experience to create a beautiful modern interior, taking full advantage of some of the original features.
Our client requested plans for 15 apartments, meaning it was necessary to create new window openings within the existing façade. We achieved this by positioning them sympathetically within the blind arcading of the brick façade. This preserves the rhythm and detailing of the elevation while maximising natural light.
Our internal layout showcases the existing building fabric with apartments cleverly arranged around Victorian cast iron columns and timber floor beams. In the upper storeys, gallery bedrooms sit between roof trusses to overlook stunning double-height living areas, bathed in natural light.
The development brings much needed housing to the town centre. And it safeguards a beautiful piece of local heritage.
