The SRA team continues to grow

The newest members of the SRA team reflect on their first few months in the studio.

We are delighted to have been able to welcome several new members of staff to the SRA team over the past few months They have all impressed us immensely, worked extremely hard, and have successfully made themselves invaluable team members.

Starting a new job is always quite a daunting experience. SRA aims to make this a positive experience for all our new colleagues. In this blog post we asked our newest colleagues how they feel about the first few months in the SRA studio.

Initially I was apprehensive to start my placement having experienced much of university in lockdown or with various restrictions in place. However, I was extremely lucky to begin my employment on the same day as a project lunch! It was such a good introduction to the practice, staff and current live projects. The range of projects with which SRA are involved is so diverse and I can’t wait to see what I will be working on throughout my time here.

By working in the studio, I was able to quickly ask someone a question and become involved with the office camaraderie, which has enhanced the learning process itself. Witnessing both technical and design reviews at various Stages of various projects has meant that I have gained experience in how a project is approached from feasibility stage through to completion. Regular catch-ups, cake mornings and even barbecues have resulted in such a warm welcome to the practice.

From my first day I was assigned two buddies to help me settle in and answer my questions. They regularly checked in with me and made sure that I was happily engaged. This helped make my first few weeks both enjoyable and informative. This approach was mirrored by the whole SRA team, who are always more than happy to help.

Previously I had had some experience with Revit, but only at a high level. SRA allowed me the time and support from various team members who are experienced with Revit, so that I could get to grips with the software, and I am happy to say that several months down the road, I now feel very comfortable working with Revit

My first 6 months at SRA have been an amazing journey where every week I have learn new skills and values. I enjoy working on different Stages of projects as every Stage is completely different. This also gives me a wider knowledge and understanding about how the architectural profession fits into the wider context of construction.

I have spent most of the time working in the studio and I have to say that I feel very comfortable in this environment. There’s a real collaborative ethos and everyone is very willing to answer any questions we have.. I also appreciate the social activities we do together, such as the regular practice lunches, BBQ’s in the back garden or going for a drink after work.

Joining in February, the welcoming office environment and buddy system allowed me to settle in quickly and regular office meetings and lunches has made it easy to meet everyone in the team. I have really enjoyed learning from the experience of the team and the hot-desking nature of the office encourages the exchange of knowledge.

As a practice, SRA is very supportive and is invested in the employees’ career and personal development. I look forward to working on more of the diverse range projects we are delivering and further broadening my skill set.

Bring on the next BBQ!

Despite starting whilst working remotely, I did not feel isolated. The team was very welcoming and considerate of the challenges and constraints of the situation. Yet, that does not compare to the lively atmosphere of the office that I have had the pleasure of experiencing. It has been a huge benefit to be in the middle of such a dynamic space, learning from the conversations happening around me.

I have had the privilege of working on a range of projects in different sectors and Work Stages in the short time I have been at SRA. Each has given me valuable experience, not just in working as part of a team but also being involved in a more collaborative process where everyone’s input is valued.

As a new member of the SRA team, I have truly enjoyed working in the studio with everyone. The work culture and environment pushes me to give my best every day. Design and technical reviews conducted every week in the office give an overview of various projects and helped in broadening my perspective.

Everyone is really supportive in responding to any question or queries I have. SRA has no barriers in terms of what you can participate in. There is something new I learn every day, and SRA has significantly helped in building my Architectural knowledge.

Mahalakshmi, Architectural Assistant

Since starting at SRA I have enjoyed how inclusive and supportive our team always is. Individual opinion is valued from everyone at every stage in their training or level of experience.

Being able to work on a great variety of projects across all the different design stages it’s a great experience for developing skills, learning from experienced team members, and collectively producing outstanding work. Our studio is the perfect environment to collaborate with colleagues and actively engage on all the projects across the office.

SRA’s approach to welcoming new starters into the team is the same approach they take to all aspects of the Practice; it is thoughtful and well considered, with a very human approach. They understand the importance of happy employees and offer a balanced work/life approach, which is valued highly by the team.

The support for the team continues when new staff have found their feet. There are regular FIKA chats, project lunches and self-reviews. Office resource meetings create and maintain a continued supportive work environment allowing everyone to keep learning and developing. All of this, as well as the bi-weekly cake, summer party, Christmas party, last minute ‘just because’ BBQ’s and Friday Drinks, all contribute to the SRA ethos.  We believe that engaged and happy employees generate a healthy creative atmosphere that allows staff and, therefore, the business to thrive.
